At Georgia Tech, residency more than triples the admit rate
Georgia Tech admitted 13.34% of first-year applicants for Fall 2025: 8,921 out of 66,881. That headline number hides two very different admissions processes.
Georgia residents were admitted at 30%. Nonresidents were admitted at 9%.
For an out-of-state applicant, the realistic comparison is not “a 13% school” but a school as selective as many private universities. Major adds a second filter on top: the College of Computing admits about 9.7% overall, before residency is taken into account.
Public flagships cap or target out-of-state enrollment in different ways, so the size of this gap varies widely. At Virginia Tech, it even runs the other way.
