Roughly 1 in 3,900 science fair entrants reaches ISEF's international stage

~1 in 3,9007 million students enter ISEF-affiliated fairs each year; about 1,800 reach the international fair

About 7 million students enter science fairs affiliated with the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair each year. Roughly 1,800 of them reach the international stage.

That is a funnel so steep the finalist group barely registers next to the starting pool. It is also why “science fair” on an application tells an admissions reader very little on its own. What matters is how far through the funnel a student went: a school fair, a regional placement, a state award, or the international stage.

The same pattern shows up across competitions. Hundreds of local contests hand out participation awards, while a small number of national events are genuinely selective. Families weighing where to spend time should look at the stage a competition leads to, not the name on the certificate.
